ESTÈVE (Maurice). A collection of correspondence including: - a letter dated January 21, (19)75, in which Estève reassures Beccaria about the authenticity of a work by Fernand Léger that the ice cream vendor wishes to purchase from a collector. He urges him to show it to Maurice Jardot at the Leiris Gallery during an upcoming trip to Paris and advises him on the selling price. - a letter dated February 15, (19)77, in which Estève discusses his latest exhibition and a forthcoming drawing created for David Beccaria: “I haven’t forgotten you either, since I’ve finally been working on your book—your drawing will be finished soon.” - A letter dated January 16, (19)79, in which the artist thanks David Beccaria for sending sweets: “Ladies prefer me slender, slim, and agile… They delight in my baldness, but not in my corpulence.” - a postcard sent from Culan (Centre-Val-de-Loire) dated October 28, (19)75. - Two greeting cards, one dated December 24, 1976, and the other sent on the occasion of Estève’s opening at the Claude Bernard Gallery on May 4, 1977. For a total of 6 items, including envelopes. Provenance: former David Beccaria collection, Nice. David Beccaria ran an ice cream shop at 2 Cours Saleya, which was frequented by artists, particularly those of the School of Nice. A passionate and highly regarded figure, he built up a significant collection of works and books by his contemporaries.
