FERAUD (Ippolit). Autograph letter signed... - Lot 27 - Métayer-Mermoz Maison de Ventes aux Enchères Paris
FERAUD (Ippolit). Autograph letter signed to Jean-Henri Fabre, professor in Ajaccio. Carpentras, August 9, 1852, 2 pp. ¼ in-8, address, postmarks (unstamped letter). INTERESTING LETTER MENTIONING A HERBORIZATION AT MONT VENTOUX. "We have had frequent rains here which have revived the vegetation and made it more beautiful than usual; thus the Ventoux which I herbalized last Tuesday with Father Gonnet presented a very different aspect from that of previous years: plants which I had seen there very rare and very stunted were, this year, luxuriant and so abundant that I was able to pick and let pick large quantities without fear of seeing the species destroyed. I will mention in particular Veronica aphylla, Valeriana saliunca, and Allium narcissiflorum which made a beautiful and magnificent parterre around Fontfiliole ". Hippolyte Féraud (1813-1894) was the collector of direct contributions to Carpentras, then to Orange. Member of the Botanical Society of France, he collected many plants from the Vaucluse for the herbariums of Alexis Jordan and Jean-Henri Fabre. Quoted in the letter, Abbot Prosper Hilarion Gonnet (1796-1861), of the diocese of Nîmes, published in 1847 a Flore élémentaire de la France and also supplied plants to J.-H. Fabre. Enclosed are two empty envelopes addressed to Fabre, professor of physical sciences (Ajaccio, Strasbourg, 16 March and 3 December 1852, stamps and postmarks).
