FABRE (Jean-Henri). Fauna of Avignon [sic].... - Lot 33 - Métayer-Mermoz Maison de Ventes aux Enchères Paris
FABRE (Jean-Henri). Fauna of Avignon [sic]. 1st fascicle [only published]. Insect beetles observed around Avignon and published under the auspices and at the expense of the administration of the Muséum-Calvet. Avignon, Typographie de Fr. Seguin aîné, 1870, in-8 de (4)-162 pp., blue-night percaline, smooth decorated spine, preserved green cover (modern binding), wetness and lack of paper on the first cover plate. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE AVIGNONNAIS NATURALIST REQUIEN SPIRIT. It is a catalogue of beetles from the Vaucluse, based on the author's personal collections and the collections of the Requien museum, an annex of the Calvet museum devoted to natural history, of which Fabre was the curator since 1866. Each species is briefly cited with its location in the department, followed by an indication of its relative rarity. "The interest of this work is that we discover, over the pages, some of the future heroes of the Entomological Memories. The most emblematic is certainly the sacred scarab " (Yves Cambefort, L'oeuvre de Jean-Henri Fabre, 1999, p. 69). Annotated copy at the time, with the addition of a few undescribed species.
