First edition of this most rare scientific voyage. Limited edition of 400 copies, this one bearing No. 5. The iconographic atlas consists of 100 engraved plates mounted on tabs, 84 of which are finely hand-coloured; each plate is accompanied by an explanatory leaflet. There are also some figures in the text. The 2 volumes of text are bound, uncut, the filled covers showing some defects (broken spine for volume 1). Precious copy enriched with an autograph manuscript signed by the author: "To Professor Bouvier, to whom I owe all my gratitude for having brought to a successful conclusion this important work, doing the greatest honour to his high competence and his great devotion to science. Maurice de Rothschild." Louis Bouvier (1856-1944) was one of the greatest French naturalists of his time. A professor at the Ecole Normale du Rhône, he joined Edmond Perrier in 1882 at the Natural History Museum in Paris. He was appointed professor there in 1889. President of the Academy of Sciences in 1924, he was awarded the Grand Prix Albert de Monaco in 1942, one of the highest awards available to the Institute.
