TIBET, 18th-19th century. Tibetan chest Polychrome and gold pigments on wood, iron frames This Himalayan chest consists of a scalloped lid that fits over the main compartment. On the top of the lid is a cartouche painted with flowers on a gold background, framed by a large frieze of greek. The back of the chest is adorned with a large openwork iron plate representing a double-vajra, surmounted by two hinges holding the lid in place. The sides with four iron handles are painted with bouquets on a gold background and friezes of gold flowers on a red background. Finally, the front panel is beautifully decorated with a central polylobed medallion decorated with a dragon on a gold background, surrounded by a frieze of Buddhist emblems and flowers.
