Qadjar box - Lot 103
Qadjar box Lacquered papier-mâché Iran, 19th century This box is decorated with the different stages of a Persian wedding. The top of the lid depicts the young bride being carried on horseback, surrounded by processional figures wearing typical Qajar hats, some holding banners. The scene is framed by a frieze of alternating portraits in medallions and cartouches decorated with flowers and birds known as Gul-o-Bulbul. The lower rim of the lid is decorated with a calligraphic frieze (restored) in Naskh script. The outer sides of the box represent the festivities following the wedding, with the young couple and their families. (Restorations) H_15 cm W_32.5 cm D_20.5 cm
