Two Qalamdan Persian pencil boxes Lacquered... - Lot 117 - Métayer-Mermoz Maison de Ventes aux Enchères Paris
Two Qalamdan Persian pencil boxes Lacquered papier-mâché Iran, probably Shiraz, third quarter of the 19th century The first qalamdan is decorated in grey and gold on a cream background, with flowers and birds on branches, known as Gul-O-Bulbul ("Rose and Nightingale"). It has a signature at the base of the rosebush that adorns the upper part "painted by the humble Fathullah". [Shirazi?] The artist Fathallah of Shiraz is known for this type of decoration in gray and gold on a beige background. A similarly decorated qalamdam by Fathallah Shirazi is kept in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Inv. No. 2018.664a-d). The second qalamdan also has a grisaille and Gul-O-Bulbul decoration, with portraits in medallions bearing the name of each figure inscribed in Persian, including one probably representing Nur Ali Shah. It also has an artist's signature 'the humble Jawad 1314'. L_22.1 and 22.7 cm
