Qalamdan Persian pencil box Lacquered papier-mâché, with its metal inkwell and embossed marking Iran, probably Esfahan , Late 19th century Pretty pencil box with a fine gold decoration of vines and bunches of grapes on a deep red glittery background. It opens onto an internal metal inkwell with an embossed mark. A similarly decorated pencil box is published in : Khalili N. D., Robinson B. W. & Stanley T. (1997), Lacquer of the Islamic Lands - The Nasser D. comparable is published in: Khalili Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, Volume XXII, Part Two, London: The Nour Foundation, p. 144, fig. 357. (It is dated 1893-94 and bears the signature 'Ghulam Riza'). L_21.1 cm
