Important Havan Seljuk Mortar Cast brass with engraved decoration and partly inlaid with copper Iran, 12th century, Seljuq Dynasty This beautiful Seljuq mortar inlaid with copper, has an engraved decoration of cartouches of cursive calligraphy alternating with medallions with vegetal decoration on the shoulder. The cylindrical body is decorated with cruciform friezes engraved with geometric interlacing and scrolls, and sprinkled with drop-shaped relief bosses and rhombs. On the flared base is a frieze of animals running on a background of scrolls alternating with copper-encrusted medallions. It probably had handles that are missing. A mortar of comparable shape and decoration is published in: Melikian-Chirvani A.S. (1982), Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, 8-18th centuries, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, cat.41, p.110. Grain marks on the shoulder and base. H_14 cm D_21.3 cm
