INUIT, NORTHON SOUND, ALASKA. Walrus ivory... - Lot 44 - Métayer-Mermoz Maison de Ventes aux Enchères Moulins
INUIT, NORTHON SOUND, ALASKA. Walrus ivory needle case. Late 19th century. The needles were stored in the sealskin strap, which slid into the sheath to protect the needles from being lost or broken. The needles were made of ivory, bone or iron. At the entrance of the sheath, a knot was made or a bead was threaded on the strap, to avoid the exit of the cord. Ivory with a very nice blond patina, engraved with hunting or fishing scenes. One end is carved with two walrus heads. Number "16" of collection or collection in ink. L_12 cm, without the strap. Provenance: auction sale, Paris, Rossini, 30 October 2008, n°23
