Jean BESANCENOT (1902-1992), a great fashion photographer, was hired by the French government to carry out this work which required five years of research and direct contact with the population, often encountering mistrust and superstition. "I painted these plates with a constant concern for objectivity in order to offer, above all, documents of rigorous truth as to line, volume, colour and overall character", he wrote. A large part is devoted to Berber costumes, which are very rich and varied according to the different regions.
