Lakai banner Polychrome silk embroidery,... - Lot 286 - Métayer-Mermoz Maison de Ventes aux Enchères Paris
Lakai banner Polychrome silk embroidery, cotton Central Asia, circa 1900 Pentagonal embroidery of polychrome silk threads on a green background, with a graphic decoration of vegetal inspiration and boteh, bordered by friezes with wavelets and geometrical motifs, and embellished in the lower part with three pendants of polychrome and metallic braided threads. Lined on the reverse with a fabric pattern of fine floral friezes on a red background. The Lakai are an ancient Uzbek-speaking nomadic people of Central Asia, settled in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Often referred to as banners, these textiles were probably used as wall decorations on the walls of yurts. A comparable (but probably later) banner is in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (Inv. N°2013.903). Another one is in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Inv. N°2004.259.81). 64,5 x 44,5 cm
