André GIDE (1869-1951). 2 L.A.S., 1898 and [1900-1901]; 4 pages in-8. September 30, 1898, to a friend. Gide is waiting for him at La Roque-Baignard: "The farm will amuse you, I think; the abundance of the harvest is admirable; the pile of hay makes the granaries burst, the grains overflow and the splendid sky has laughed over all this for a long time... Tuesday evening [beginning of 1900 or 1901], to Jacques des GACHONS, about King Candaule: he approves the estimates of des Gachons, but he is "engaged too much before with Lugné-P. to keep you the virginity of Candaule". [It was in fact Lugné-Poe who premiered Le Roi Candaule at the Théâtre de l'OEuvre on May 9, 1901]. A L.A.S. from Tristan BERNARD, Deauville August 31, 1938 (1 p. in-8), about an article that did not appear; and a card a.s. from Georges DUHAMEL, Valmondois August 1, 1954, to Figueras thanking him for his article is attached.
