Carlo COPPOLA (?- Naples 1672). The adoration of the golden calf. Copper. H_60.5 cm L_87 cm We would like to thank Mrs. Miriam de Penta for suggesting that this large copper be attributed to Carlo Coppola. A pupil of Anielo Falcone, Carlo Coppola painted many battles, like his master, but also history scenes, most of them biblical. Here, the landscape and figures in the background are reminiscent of Domenico Garguilo (known as Mico Spadaro). Our painting fits into the context of the clacist painters influenced by Nicolas Poussin in Naples (e.g. Andrea de Leone). We know from Nicolas Poussin's biographers that he painted this subject for a Neapolitan patron, which was destroyed during Masaniello's revolt in 1647. Expert : Stéphane Pinta, Cabinet Turquin
