John Cox Dillman ENGLEHEART (1782/84-1862). Portrait in uniform of Hugh Ritchie Wallace of Biscany, 1814, a wealthy planter in Jamaica. Miniature on ivory signed, dated and localized on the reverse in ink: J. Dillman Engleheart/pinxit/1814 JanY/ XX NewmanStreet / London. H_12 cm L_9 cm (when viewed), (a crack at the bottom, a small chip at the top right corner, some chipping). Gilt brass frame with floral decoration; presented in its original red morocco-lined case with the model's calling card "H. Ritchie Wallace of Biscany". Hugh Ritchie Wallace of Biscany (Jamaica, 1789- Auxerre, circa 1870, died unmarried), entered the 1srt Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots), whose officer's uniform he appears to be wearing here, with his bicorne in hand. This regiment, stationed in the Caribbean, took part in the Anglo-American War of 1812-1815 in Canada. Wallace had inherited important sugar plantations in Jamaica, Biscany Estate, St Elizabeth, with 210 slaves, when he commissioned this portrait in London by one of England's most renowned painters. He received an indemnity of £2181 in 1837 after the abolition of slavery. (Centre for the Study of the legacies of British Slavery). Interesting militaria document and history of slavery.
