May Day after Franz Xaver WINTERHALTER (1805-1873). The Duke of Wellington presents a box to Queen Victoria holding Prince Arthur, born in 1850, offering lily of the valley in return, with Prince Albert leaning against a column, after Winterhalter's 1851 painting in the British Royal Collection. Miniature on ivory, one crack to the left, rect. H_7.2 cm W_11.2 cm. Moulded frame in gutta percha, with arabesque decoration. H_12.2 cm L_16.1 cm. Gross weight: 167 grams. On the reverse, collector's handwritten label: "miniature after Winterhalter/ach. in London" and two labels: 32 and 202. Late 19th century. Provenance: acquired in London; coll. Paul Fourché (1840-1922) then by descent. Expert: N. Lemoine-Bouchard, member of SFEP; a Cic will be issued, not allowing export outside the European Union.
