Note: Much appreciated by the aristocrats and nobles of his time, Hungarian-born painter Philip de Laszlo made his name in genre painting at the end of the 19th century. His portraits, commissioned by Hungarian, German and English society, captivate with the physical resemblance the artist is able to instill in his models. Our work is a typical example of Laszlo's production: Madame Margaret Gordon-Moore is shown facing the light, putting on her gloves. The delicacy of her features and the richness of her attire gracefully portray the character and status of our protagonist. On the reverse, the same subject is sketched in evening attire, wearing an elegant midnight-blue gown and fine pearl earrings. All the refinement of the English nobility is thus expressed in this portrait, which has remained in private hands until now.
