Note: This work by painter Nguyễn Khang perfectly illustrates the artist's ability to innovate technically and leave his mark on lacquer art in the early 1950s. Turning his back on his large allegorical gold and silver panels on a black background, the painter favored more everyday evocations, allowing him to express the full extent of his mastery.
The use of new, brighter pigments (notably blue), the variety of techniques for applying golds and oxides to render foliage, the meticulousness of detail: all contribute to making this joyful ode to Vietnamese pastoral life a vertiginous demonstration of virtuosity.
Expert: Mr. Etienne Leterrier.
