Charles LAPICQUE (1898-1989). - Lot 112
Charles LAPICQUE (1898-1989). Night in the Desert, 1976. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Countersigned, titled and dated on the back. H_27 cm W_35.5 cm Provenance: former collection of Raphaël-Georges Mischkind, Lille. Note: A painter-scientist, Charles Lapicque achieved a synthesis between cubist techniques and his own personal theories on color. Contradicting the relationship of colors to the laws of perspective, Lapicque created a new representation of space, where blue was intended for "solid, heavy, close-up bodies" and red, orange or yellow "for luminous or distant bodies, such as the sky". Through the density of his figuration, the simplicity of his line, the ambiguity between background and form, his varied subjects (ancient and Christian myths, seascapes, animal portraits, deserts, landscapes, still lifes), the artist established himself as a precursor of Pop-Art and Figuration Libre. Our painting fits in perfectly with his work "against the grain", depicting his memories of the Algerian desert in bright, inverted colors, in a solitary, empty space.
