Irial VETS (1908-2001). Trouville, la route de la corniche and the calvair. Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 1950. H_66 cm L_82 cm. Irial Vets (1908-2001) started out as a shoemaker, then made advertising curtains for the cinema and became a restaurateur in Trouville, Normandy. He was a self-taught painter and sculptor. In 1968, at the age of 60, a newspaper advertisement caught his eye: the disused chapel of Saint-Vincent-de-la Rivière near Broglie was up for sale. He visited the chapel and thought it would enable him to realize a dream: to reproduce on the ceiling a faithful copy of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.
