Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), a French physicist, botanist and agronomist, was responsible for the launch in 1757 of the Description des Arts et Métiers: a collection of periodical works on craft trades, published on Colbert's initiative. Initially published in the form of fascicules (unbound quires), the original printed editions were enriched from 1761 onwards with plates, drawn and copper-engraved in intaglio by the most skilful artists of the time. A very fine copy.
