MARCHUTZ (Léo, ill.) & PAPART (Max, ill.). L'Evangile selon Saint Luc - and an extremely rare set of handwritten letters signed by Max PAPART and dated 1948, mostly addressed to Docteur Thomas, who commissioned the aforementioned work. Aix-en-Provence, Chateaunoir, 1949. One vol. in-4 on ff. in illustrated full cover and cardboard slipcase, illustrated with 115 original lithographs by Léo Marchutz. One of the Hors Commerce contributors' copies, numbered C. Our batch of letters includes the order contract, progress reports on preparation work, price negotiations and miscellaneous items. Max Papart was in charge of printing 2/3 of the Gospel lithographs, and accompanied Léo Marchutz's creative process in Aix-en-Provence. A very interesting exchange, punctuated by Papart's original drawings and reflections on Marchutz's temperament: "pages 8 and 9, which contain the Annunciation, provoke a drama in Léo, who no longer knows whether he's doing well or not".
