Wang KEPING (Chinese-born sculptor, b. 1949). - Lot 224
Wang KEPING (Chinese-born sculptor, b. 1949). Untitled (figure). Direct-cut wood sculpture with natural patina, monogrammed on reverse. H_50 cm Provenance: private collection in the south of France. We would like to thank Madame Aline Wang, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work. Note: Born in China in 1949, Wang Keping was one of the founding members of the protest group "The Stars" (Xingxing), alongside Ai Weiwei and Ma Desheng; an avant-garde movement that emerged in Beijing in the late 1970s, in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. Forced into exile in France in 1984, Wang established himself as a major figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture. Working almost exclusively in wood, Wang Keping develops a minimal, sensual sculptural language - influenced by archaic Chinese aesthetics, European Expressionism and a form of organic purity inherited from Brancusi. Our work powerfully embodies the hallmarks of his production: compact, stylized forms, visible traces of direct carving, warm, veined patina, often the result of partial burning, and a deep anthropomorphic grounding: the body is suggested rather than described, totemic, reduced to the essence of volumes.
