Wang KEPING (Chinese-born sculptor, b. 1949). - Lot 222
Wang KEPING (Chinese-born sculptor, b. 1949). Untitled (couple) - circa 2000. Direct-cut acacia wood sculpture with natural patina. H_65 cm Provenance: private collection in western France. Note: Born in China in 1949, Wang Keping was one of the founding members of the protest group "The Stars" (Xingxing), alongside Ai Weiwei and Ma Desheng; an avant-garde movement that emerged in Beijing in the late 1970s, in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. Forced into exile in France in 1984, Wang established himself as a major figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture. Working almost exclusively in wood, Wang Keping develops a minimal, sensual sculptural language - influenced by archaic Chinese aesthetics, European Expressionism and a form of organic purity inherited from Brancusi. We would like to thank Madame Aline Wang, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
