Censer with the Hebrews in the furnace. - Lot 679
Censer with the Hebrews in the furnace.
Bronze with golden patina mounted on a dish, featuring three Hebrews whose names are engraved in arcs of a circle (Azarias, Ananias and Misaël), fantastic animals and a Latin inscription around the rim: "I, Rénier, give this censer as a sign that at the hour of death you will grant me a funeral similar to yours, and I believe that your prayers will be like incense for Christ".
Reworked in the 19th century from the original Romanesque copy produced around 1160/1665 and now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv.A82).
