ENGRAVING/HERMIT] DE LEU (Thomas)/SADELER (Justus)] An Italian-style volume in full speckled calf, spine ribbed and richly decorated with early 17th-century engravings: 119 engravings (incomplete) in 5 suites introduced by frontispieces (two missing). Collection of 119 numbered engravings depicting religious scenes of prayer and solitude, some signed, engraved in the style of Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) and published by the Sadeler brothers Johann (1550-1600) and Rafael (1560-1628). 5 parts : - a series of 20 engravings (lacking the frontispiece, and engravings 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 22) - Trophaeum Vitae Solitarae: 27 of 29 numbered plates (plates 23 and 27 are missing) - Sylvae Sacrae: 23 of 25 plates (plates 5 and 19 are missing) - 24 plates out of 25 (missing frontispiece and engraving 22. Engraving 16 bound after 17) - Solitudo Sive Vitae patrum eremicolarum; Missing plates 26, 28 and 29. Numerous restorations. Mottling. Binding rubbed. The names Marco Sadeler and Marti de Vos come up regularly.
