ARTS ET METIERS] - Lot 38
ARTS ET METIERS]
MACQUER (Pierre-Joseph)]
Art de la Teinture en Soie, sans lieu (Delatour), 1763
In-folio of IX, (1), 86 pages and VI full-page intaglio plates.
A fine copy of the first edition of this dyeing treatise by Pierre Joseph Macquer (1718-1784), a French physician and chemist, who was commissioned by the king to find the hard porcelain whose secret was jealously guarded by the Chinese. Together with his friend Baumé, he studied the art of silk dyeing for the Gobelins factory. Later, his research focused more directly on Prussian blue and cochineal red.
