Théophile Alexandre STEINLEN (1859-1923) and Aristide BRUANT - Lot 478
Théophile Alexandre STEINLEN (1859-1923) and Aristide BRUANT (1851-1925). Le récidiviste, design for the cover of Le Mirliton. Charcoal and blue pencil on paper, signed on the right. Original poem signed by Bruant in brown ink on the mount. On verso, a copy of the illustrated cover of Le Mirliton. H_29 cm W_35 cm (when viewed). In 1885, Aristide Bruant launched a four-page weekly magazine, Le Mirliton, of which he was director. The front page was adorned with a drawing, usually by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, and the content featured Bruant's song lyrics. With an interruption between May 1896 and June 1903, it was published until 1906. Several frames combining the cover of Le Mirliton and Bruant's text have been sold at public auction in recent years, notably in Blois in June 2024, and in Paris (Ader) in September 2025.
