Serge MATTA (1910-1984). - Lot 659
Serge MATTA (1910-1984). Man in front of a madhouse. Ink and watercolor drawing. H_46 cm L_31 cm Brother of surrealist painter Roberto Matta, companion of fashion designer and virtuoso graphic artist Tom Kheog, Serge Matta left an extremely abundant body of drawn work. As an illustrator, he produced advertising projects for Schiaparelli, including promotional calendars and perfume posters. But also for Charles Jourdan shoes, Helena Rubinstein perfumes, the monthly Vogue and stylist Jacques Fath. In the same spirit, Serge Matta multiplied his studies for fashion accessories: stockings, gloves, lipsticks and cosmetics. But the bulk of his graphic work, from the late '60s to the '70s, concerned fashion figures: evening tubes, wedding dresses, afternoon suits, bathing suits and beach costumes. Most of his studies were drawn in pen and black Indian ink on large sheets of Ingres paper, underlined with bright, clean washes. His style, as a fashion designer, lay in an abundance of drapery, scrolls and bows, on tight, form-fitting outfits, accompanied by matching hats: bibis, capelines and feathered headdresses. Hence the abundance and fantasy of his hat studies. First and foremost ballet costumes: leotards, tutus or fancy hats. But also theatrical costumes: Pierrot et Colombine, la mendiante et le vagabond, like stage sets. Serge Matta's graphic creations are a precise, colorful and witty testimony to a major trend in fashion and what we now call "lifestyle" in the Sixties. The original drawings presented here were made for Elsa Schiaparelli, of whom he was a friend, for Lucien Lelong, milliner Lily Daché and Elizabeth Arden. They are, depending on the case, couture models, advertising documents or window decorations, particularly for Elsa Schiaparelli (source POP : plateforme ouverte du patrimoine).
