Russian chest known as a “Teremok.” - Lot 379
Russian chest known as a “Teremok.” Wood, iron, tinted mica, and polychrome decoration. Sloping lid with double hinges. The interior is decorated with foliage and interlacing patterns in bright colors. The stained mica decoration is protected by openwork ironwork. Hinged handles on the sides. The locks are complete with their wrought-iron keys. Russia, late 17th or early 18th century. H_40.5 cm W_43.5 cm D_35 cm. This type of box echoes the architectural form of an ancient Russian tower house, called a “terem,” which served as a women’s quarters. The Teremok has two lids and one compartment. The upper section was designed as a secret compartment and could be secured with a separate key.
