Jules Elie DELAUNAY (1828–1891). Italian Landscape, Study. Circa 1857–1858. Oil on paper, mounted on canvas. On the reverse of the canvas, an ink signature “A. DUVIVIER,” the date “July 1862,” and a reference number B473. H_16.9 cm W_48.2 cm. Provenance: according to an ink inscription on the stretcher: estate sale, Paris, Drouot, December 14–15–16, 1891, likely lot no. 138 or subsequent. Collection of George DESVALLIERES (1861–1950) or Emile PALADILHE (1844–1926). Passed down through the family. The inscription “A.DUVIVIER” has not been identified. It is dated “July 1862,” nine months after Delaunay’s return from Italy. This may refer to the person who mounted the paper onto the canvas.
