Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). - Lot 284
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Large poppy. Engobed terracotta sculpture, known as “sigillata.” Signed and dated 7.3.(19)90 on the base. H_45 cm W_24 cm D_10.5 cm Provenance: private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from Languedoc who trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates works in sigillata clay—first engobed and then smoked—with surfaces treated to highlight their texture and crackle patterns, which lend depth and uniqueness to his pieces.
