Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). - Lot 290
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Antique-style helmet—June 1, 1996. Engobed terracotta sculpture, known as “sigillata.” Signed and dated 1.6.(19)96. H_30 cm W_27 cm, significant crack. Provenance: private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates works in sigillata clay—first engobed and then smoked—with surfaces treated to highlight their texture and crackle patterns, which lend depth and uniqueness to his pieces.
