Note: Born in China in 1949, Wang Keping is one of the founding members of the dissident group “Les Étoiles” (Xingxing), alongside Ai Weiwei and Ma Desheng; an avant-garde movement that emerged in Beijing in the late 1970s, in the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution. Forced into exile in France in 1984, Wang established himself there as a major figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture.
Working almost exclusively in wood, Wang Keping developed a minimalist and sensual sculptural language—influenced by ancient Chinese aesthetics, European Expressionism, and a form of organic abstraction inherited from Brancusi.
