Engraved oval intaglio mounted in a modern gold ring. - Lot 2
Engraved oval intaglio mounted in a modern gold ring. It depicts a winged male figure standing in profile to the right. The figure is wearing a wide-brimmed petasus, an attribute of Greco-Roman origin associated with figures of messengers and winged genies. He is dressed in a belted tunic, treated with fine linear incisions indicating the folds of the fabric. The wings, schematized but clearly legible, spread out over the back. In his left hand, the figure holds a Latin cross mounted on a staff (crux hastata), an explicit symbol of Christian victory. The right arm is lowered to the side of the body. The feet rest on an incised ground line. On the reverse, a profile with curly hair. Rock crystal. Early Byzantine, 4th century. H_2 cm. Gross weight: 6.81 grams. Expert : Madame Marie-Margaux COHEN
