CHINA, Ming dynasty, 16th-17th century.
Rare, large sculpture of Buddha Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha), in chased and gilded bronze.
He is shown with his eyes almost closed. He wears the monastic habit, his chest uncovered and adorned with a swastika.
His right hand holds the myrobolan fruit in varada mudra (offering gesture), his left hand in dhyana mudra (meditation gesture).
H_51 cm L_39 cm (sculpture).
H_14 cm W_44.5 cm (with base)
Carved wooden base (later).
Provenance: French private collection, transmitted by descent from an expatriate who lived in Vietnam in the 1930s-1950s.
