Gustave-Adolphe MOSSA (Nice, 1883–1971). - Lot 24
Gustave-Adolphe MOSSA (Nice, 1883–1971). Loti and Aziyadé on the Bosphorus. Pencil and watercolor on paper, signed lower left. H_35 cm W_24.5 cm, small foxing spot in the upper portion Note: *Aziyadé* is Pierre Loti’s first novel, written during his stay in Turkey and published anonymously in 1879. In it, he tells the tragic love story of the beautiful Aziyadé, a woman in the harem of a wealthy old man, and Loti, a young European naval officer, during his journey through Turkey from 1876 to 1877. This story is emblematic of the Orientalist movement that shaped the arts and literature of the 19th century. Gustave Adolphe Mossa, a painter and illustrator associated with the Symbolist movement, often drew inspiration from the great authors of his time, whose works he read avidly. Thus, over the course of his life, he created a body of work imbued with references to myths and fables.
